The purpose of this opening sequence is to intrigue and grab the attention of the audience. This is clear by the way we only see the characters hands and briefly what he is doing - leaving the audience questioning who this man is and what he is doing. As well as this the acts he appears to be doing as so unfamiliar and unrecognisable to the audience making things appear suspicious. The film is clearly a psychological crime thriller. The props portray this, for example the torture weapons - instantly intriguing the audience and making them want to watch the rest of the film in order to find out what it is he is doing and why. There are also criminal records and razor blades laid out across the desk which he is going through. At one point in the sequence we see him cutting off what appears his own finger prints.
The camera shots are mainly only high and low angle shots other than a few point of view shots. The point of view shots are effective as they show you things from the characters perspective further intriguing us to what is going on and what he is doing.
The text/titles are constantly flicking throughout the opening sequence which is revelant to the genre of psychological crime. The only setting in the sequence is in one room, making the opening sequence appear quite basic, however this makes the audience more curious, as well as the quick cuts between shots not leaving the audience enough time to take a proper look at the tools and props so that they can only find out very little information.
